Chocolate Ball Stonecrop
Sedum hakonense ‘Chocolate Ball’

4-inch pot

A distinctive low-growing stonecrop, Chocolate Ball forms spreading mounds of fine, needle-like foliage in rich milk-chocolate to bronze-brown tones. As temperatures cool, the foliage develops striking burgundy and vivid red coloring, providing excellent fall and winter interest. Small star-shaped yellow flowers appear in summer, creating a bright contrast against the unusually dark foliage.

Native to Japan, the species is naturally adapted to rocky sites, while ‘Chocolate Ball’ is a garden selection prized for its unusual foliage color. It thrives in full sun and well-drained soil and is highly drought tolerant once established. Its spreading habit makes it especially effective in rock gardens, containers, alpine troughs, and along sunny border edges.

  • Grows 4–6 in. tall x 12–18 in. wide
