Pyramidal Saxifrage
Saxifraga cotyledon
4-inch pot
A distinctive evergreen alpine perennial that forms handsome rosettes of thick, gray-green, strap-shaped leaves with finely toothed, silvery edges. In late spring, mature rosettes send up airy, branching sprays of numerous small white flowers, sometimes delicately spotted with red. The dramatic flower stems rise well above the low foliage and give the plant its characteristic pyramidal appearance.
Native to mountainous regions of Europe, pyramidal saxifrage is especially well suited to rock gardens, crevices, troughs, and containers. It prefers cool conditions and exceptionally good drainage, making a gritty or rocky planting site ideal. Individual rosettes die after flowering, but established plants produce additional rosettes that continue the clump.
