Blazing Star
Liatris spp.
1 gallon pot
A distinctive North American native perennial, blazing star produces tall, upright spikes densely packed with fuzzy purple to lavender-pink flowers. Unlike most flower spikes, the unusual blooms typically open from the top downward, creating a long-lasting midsummer display. The narrow, grass-like foliage forms tidy clumps beneath the flowers, while the nectar-rich blooms attract butterflies, bees, and other pollinators.
Blazing star thrives in full sun and well-drained soil and develops good drought tolerance once established. Its strong vertical form provides excellent contrast with rounded perennials and ornamental grasses, making it particularly effective in pollinator gardens, prairie-style plantings, borders, and cutting gardens. The flower spikes are also excellent for fresh and dried arrangements.
