A distinctive low-growing evergreen fern, Alpine Water Fern forms dense carpets of small, leathery fronds that emerge bronze to reddish before maturing to glossy deep green. Its compact, creeping habit and fine texture make it an excellent groundcover for woodland gardens, shady rock gardens, slopes, and beneath shrubs. Cooler weather can bring attractive bronze and reddish tones back into the foliage, providing additional seasonal interest.
 
Native to cool temperate regions of the Southern Hemisphere, this tough little fern spreads gradually by rhizomes and performs best in cool, moist conditions with protection from hot afternoon sun. It tolerates surprisingly open sites where adequate moisture is available and makes an attractive alternative to more conventional shade groundcovers.
